Washington, DC (November 17, 2017) – The American College of Employee Benefits Counsel (ACEBC) named Lisa A. Tavares, a partner in Venable's Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation Group, as a Fellow at its 18th annual induction dinner.

Induction as a Fellow of this organization is viewed as a national distinction. Each nominee is required to have focused on employee benefits law for at least 20 years and to have demonstrated a sustained commitment to public awareness and understanding of benefits laws through such activities as writing, speaking, public policy analysis, public education, or public service. Nominees are also required to have provided exceptionally high-quality professional services to clients, the bar, and the public. As a result, selection as a Fellow is a high honor reflecting substantive contributions to the field of employee benefits over the Fellow's entire career. This year's inductees join more than 400 current Fellows in the organization.

Ms. Tavares has counseled clients for more than 20 years on all types of executive compensation and employee benefits matters. She advises public and private employers on all areas related to ERISA, and her practice regularly includes the administration of both pension and welfare plans. Her practice also involves compliance issues with the Internal Revenue Service, Department of Labor, and the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation. Prior to joining Venable, Ms. Tavares was an attorney with the Internal Revenue Service, Office of Chief Counsel, National Office, where she concentrated on qualified plan issues under examination and in litigation.

"I'm honored to receive this recognition from the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel and to join other distinguished Fellows in sustaining excellent service to the employee benefits community and influencing public policy," said Ms. Tavares.

The ACEBC, a not-for-profit organization, was formed in recognition of significant legal and social policy issues affecting the regulation and management of pension, retirement, group health, welfare, and disability plans. The College's mission statement is "Fostering excellence in the practice of employee benefits law and advancing public understanding of employee benefits." The College encourages the study and development of employee benefits law and engages in such projects as professional discussions and high-level symposia on significant issues, a searchable data base of Fellows who are willing to serve as expert witnesses and/or mediators, cosponsorship of continuing legal education programs, and recognition of the achievements of distinguished employee benefits attorneys. The College also sponsors a law student outreach mentoring program and a national law student writing competition to encourage legal scholarship in this evolving area of law.
